OEM Alternators
While the battery and spark plugs are what help get your Ford vehicle started when you first fire up your ignition, you need something to provide the electricity they use. That's what your factory alternator does. When it's operating right, you never even think about it. When it fails, you'll know, since the battery will quickly drain and your Ford pickup, SUV, van, or car will leave you stranded by the side of the road.
How Do Ford Alternators Work?
The crankshaft transforms the engine pistons' vertical motion into a circular rotation. That causes a drive belt to spin a pulley on the rotor's shaft. Magnetic coils inside the rotor begin to rotate, creating electricity that powers your entertainment system, windows, and other essentials. Unfortunately, even top-quality Ford alternators can eventually begin to fail, whether due to age or an improperly installed piece of electronic equipment.
How Do You Spot a Faulty Alternator?
Often you won't even know that your alternator is failing until it happens. However, signs of potential trouble include:
To test for a bad alternator, check your battery’s voltage with the engine turned off. If it reads lower than 12.5 volts, give it a charge and then test it again. If you don’t see a higher voltage reading after the charge, your alternator likely needs replacing.
